Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona secured the Joan Gamper Trophy title after defeating Al Ahly of Egypt 2-1. The match took place on Wednesday evening at the Camp Nou stadium.
The Catalan team retained their title for the second consecutive season, maintaining their position as the most decorated team in the friendly tournament. Furthermore, they increased their total number of titles to 48.
In contrast, Al Ahly failed to become the latest team to add its name to the list of winners of the Joan Gamper Trophy, a tournament that began in 1966.
Barcelona started the match with attacking pressure, and Hamza Abdelkarim almost opened the scoring in the fifth minute after firing a shot from inside the penalty area. However, Al-Ahly’s defense intervened to clear the danger.
In the 14th minute, Mohamed Hany saved Al Ahly from a certain goal by clearing the ball off the line. This came after a poor clearance by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
Rafinha almost gave Barcelona the lead in the 18th minute with a powerful shot from inside the penalty area, but Mohamed El Gazzar intervened just in time to clear the ball off the goal line.
Hamza Abdelkarim put Barcelona ahead in the 30th minute after capitalizing on a perfect cross from Rafinha, converting the ball into Al Ahly’s net.
Barcelona were awarded a penalty in the 43rd minute after Hadi Riad fouled Rafinha inside the penalty area. The Brazilian player successfully converted the penalty, doubling his team’s lead before the end of the first half.
At the start of the second half, Al Ahly managed to reduce the deficit through Ahmed Mostafa “Zizo” in the 51st minute. He went one-on-one with goalkeeper Juan Garcia and skillfully put the ball into the goal.
The referee cancelled a third goal for Barcelona in the 65th minute, due to an offside call against Hamza Abdelkarim.
Mohamed El Shenawy made a brilliant save in the 68th minute, denying Anthony Gordon’s powerful shot inside the penalty area. This kept Al Ahly’s hopes of a comeback alive.
Al Ahly players appealed for a penalty in the 72nd minute after Koka went down in the box following a challenge from a Barcelona player. However, the referee waved play on.
In the 88th minute, the referee awarded Barcelona another penalty kick after Ahmed Eid fouled Anthony Jordan inside the penalty area.
Gordon took the penalty, but Mohamed El Shenawy made a brilliant save in the 90th minute, denying Barcelona a third goal. Ultimately, the match ended with a 2-1 victory for the Catalan side, securing them the Joan Gamper Trophy.
