Tehran, Iran – The Financial Times reported on Friday, June 19, 2026, that Iran has decided to postpone the round of talks scheduled with the United States in Switzerland. This sudden diplomatic move comes as a direct result of the recent military escalation, which followed intensive Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon.
Linking the diplomatic track to Lebanese security
Diplomatic sources told the newspaper that Iran’s current position links the resumption of negotiations to Tehran receiving concrete guarantees that would ensure an end to Israeli bombing of Lebanese territory. This demand has put the dialogue process in a state of anticipation and stagnation.
Widening scope of Israeli raids
In a related development concerning the escalation on the ground, the Israeli army announced on Friday that it had carried out a wide range of attacks targeting more than 80 sites in various areas of southern and eastern Lebanon.
Continuation of ground operations
The Israeli army claimed that these airstrikes targeted Hezbollah positions and personnel. At the same time, the Israeli army confirmed that its forces were continuing their military operations in the areas where they are present in southern Lebanon.
This development underscores the close link between the diplomatic track and the military arena. Stabilizing the security situation in Lebanon has become a prerequisite for opening channels of dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
With military operations continuing on the ground, the fate of the Swiss talks remains contingent on the extent to which the parties involved respond to Iranian demands for guarantees to halt hostilities. This adds further complications to international mediation efforts in the region.
