Washington, DC – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned of the growing repercussions of continued disruption to international maritime traffic. He emphasized that ongoing tensions in vital waterways threaten the stability of global trade. Furthermore, supply chains upon which many countries rely for their basic needs are being affected.
Guterres explained, in remarks carried by international news agencies, that disruptions or slowdowns in shipping in several strategic areas directly impact commodity, energy, and food prices. He also noted that the global economy remains vulnerable to any further shocks to maritime transport routes.
He added that the United Nations is following developments in international maritime routes with concern. He also called for de-escalation and stressed the importance of ensuring freedom and safety of navigation as a cornerstone of global economic stability.
He emphasized that the continuation of these tensions could exacerbate economic crises, particularly in countries dependent on maritime imports. He also stressed the importance of diplomatic solutions to ensure the smooth flow of global trade.
