Zurich, Switzerland – FIFA has decided on the status of Mohannad Lasheen, a player for the Egyptian national team, regarding his participation in the match against Australia, scheduled as part of the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. FIFA has officially confirmed his suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
FIFA announced on Monday the list of players suspended for the Round of 32 matches. Mohannad Lasheen’s name was on the list, meaning he will miss Egypt’s first knockout match.
The Egyptian midfielder received his first yellow card during the match against New Zealand. He then received a second yellow card in the final minutes of the match against Iran. Therefore, he became suspended according to tournament regulations.
The 2026 World Cup regulations stipulate that yellow cards are wiped clean after the group stage. However, this does not apply to players who receive a second yellow card in the third round. This is the case for Mohannad Lasheen.
Despite the Egyptian national team’s coaching staff’s attempts to appeal the yellow card the player received against Iran, FIFA upheld the decision. Consequently, his absence from the match against Australia is now official.
Egypt’s problems aren’t limited to Lashin’s absence. Doubts also surround the fitness of Ahmed Fatouh, who is continuing his rehabilitation program after sustaining an injury during the group stage.
The Egyptian national team is preparing to face Australia next Friday evening at Arlington Stadium in Texas, USA. This is a match in which the Pharaohs aim to continue their historic run in the World Cup and reach the Round of 16.
