Jakarta, Indonesia – The European Union has expressed its solidarity with Indonesia, announcing its readiness to support search and rescue operations following the powerful earthquake that struck parts of the country. This support will include providing satellite data and resources to help emergency teams identify the most affected areas. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the EU’s readiness to activate the Copernicus Earth observation service. This aims to assist Indonesian authorities in assessing the extent of the damage and directing rescue teams to areas requiring urgent intervention.

Satellite images and maps are helping to pinpoint the locations of landslides and damage to roads and infrastructure, particularly in areas difficult to access due to the earthquake’s aftermath. Indonesian rescue teams are continuing their search for the missing and injured, while simultaneously assessing the damage to infrastructure and residential areas.

Authorities are working to provide basic necessities for the affected population, amid concerns that aftershocks could hamper rescue operations. These aftershocks could further complicate access to some areas. The European Union affirmed its support as an expression of solidarity with the Indonesian people and expressed its readiness to contribute to humanitarian response efforts and address the aftermath of the disaster.
