Kampala, Uganda – Ugandan authorities have announced the tragic deaths of 20 schoolchildren and one adult following a devastating school bus crash in the eastern part of the country. The horrific accident has prompted the government to issue an immediate and indefinite ban on all school field trips and educational excursions, sparking a wave of grief and urgent investigations into transit safety.

Initial Investigations Reveal Accident Cause

According to the Ugandan police, preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and violently strike a large rock before overturning in Chikwatit village, located within the Kapchorwa region. The bus, which belonged to King David Junior School in the capital city of Kampala, was transporting students back from an educational excursion to the prominent Sipi Falls. The crash also left three adults and several children with varying degrees of injuries, who were rushed to nearby facilities for medical care.

Government Imposes Strict Suspension on Student Outings

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the Ugandan government enacted a total suspension of all school trips and student expeditions starting this Friday. Speaking on behalf of the administration, Education Minister Chrysostom Muyingo emphasized that this urgent directive serves as a vital measure to protect student lives. He clarified that the ban will remain firmly in place until the ministry conducts a rigorous review of transport safety guidelines and evaluates existing monitoring mechanisms to prevent such catastrophic events from recurring.

A Recurring Crisis on Uganda’s Roads

This latest tragedy underscores the persistent challenges surrounding road safety in Uganda, where experts frequently blame poorly maintained vehicles, inadequate road infrastructure, and a lack of proper highway lighting for high accident rates. The country previously witnessed another major disaster in October 2025, when a bus crash on the highway connecting Kampala and Gulu claimed 46 lives. This latest incident has reignited intense national debate over the critical need for stricter traffic enforcement and modernized mass transit regulations, particularly regarding the safety of student transport.
