Paris, France – French authorities have imposed heightened security measures in the capital, Paris, to coincide with the 81st anniversary of the May 8th victory. This comes amidst a heavy deployment of police and gendarmes around the Champs-Élysées and other key landmarks hosting official and public events commemorating the historic occasion.
The French capital has seen extensive security reinforcements, including checkpoints and increased surveillance at entrances to public squares and metro stations. In addition, extra counter-terrorism units have been deployed to secure large gatherings, in anticipation of any potential threats that could disrupt the national celebrations.
The commemoration ceremonies included the laying of wreaths at war memorials and tributes to the victims of World War II, attended by government and military officials and public figures. French flags flew in various squares and main streets amidst a significant public turnout.
The French Ministry of the Interior confirmed that the security plan aimed to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors during the events. This is especially important given the security challenges facing Europe at present. The Ministry stated that security forces were on full alert throughout the commemorations.
