Geneva, Switzerland – The UAE affirmed that the continued military escalation in El Obeid and surrounding areas demonstrates that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan.
It reiterated its call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and the establishment of
an urgent humanitarian truce during an emergency session of
the UN Human Rights Council convened to discuss the developments in the city.
Condemning violations and protecting civilians
In its statement to the Council, the UAE reiterated its condemnation of all violations of international law committed
by both parties to the conflict across Sudan, including the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
It emphasized that the protection of civilians must remain a priority for the international community.
Furthermore, it stressed the need to adhere to international humanitarian law
and to alleviate the suffering of the population affected by the ongoing fighting.
Call to expand arms embargo
The UAE called for expanding the UN arms embargo to cover all of Sudan.
It deemed this a necessary step to reduce hostilities and enhance the protection of civilians.
The UAE also stressed the importance of ensuring safe, rapid, and unimpeded humanitarian
access to all affected areas, which would help alleviate the worsening humanitarian crisis.
Supporting the civilian political process
The UAE, as a member of the Quartet on Sudan, welcomed the outcomes of the Berlin Conference
and the opportunity it provided to support Sudanese civilian components.
It also commended the efforts of the Quintet to advance the political process.
In its concluding statement, the UAE emphasized that the primary
objective of the international community should be to support an inclusive,
civilian-led political process, independent of the conflicting parties and extremist groups.
It clarified that this process must reflect the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security, stability, and an end to the ongoing crisis.
