London, UK – The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced on Tuesday that they had received official notification of an attack on a merchant vessel by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on its outbound journey. The attack caused direct material damage to the engine room and injured one crew member. The UKMTO confirmed that the remaining crew members are receiving necessary support and assistance in coordination with the Omani Coast Guard. Initial reports indicate no environmental impact or leaks as a result of the attack, while the relevant authorities continue their investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and the party responsible.
Security warnings and repercussions for maritime traffic
Following the incident, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) urged all vessels transiting the area to exercise extreme caution and to immediately report any suspicious activities that could threaten the safety of maritime navigation in this vital corridor.
Slowdown in maritime shipping traffic
This attack comes at a time when shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed considerably. Ship-tracking data from the commodities shipping company Kpler shows that transits were minimal, with only six vessels passing through on Monday (three departing and three arriving), compared to a ten-day average of eleven. This decline reflects the continued caution amid the diplomatic stalemate in de-escalation talks between the United States and Iran.
