Caracas, Venezuela – Venezuelan authorities have announced that the death toll from the two devastating earthquakes that struck the country has risen to 6,438. This comes as the aftermath of the humanitarian disaster continues, leaving widespread damage to homes, buildings, and infrastructure. The earthquakes struck several regions of Venezuela, causing dozens of buildings to collapse and severely damaging thousands of homes. Meanwhile, rescue and emergency teams are continuing their search and assessment efforts to determine the full extent of the damage.
Official data revealed that approximately 60,000 homes sustained varying degrees of damage. Around 24,000 homes were rendered uninhabitable. This forced thousands of families to flee their homes and seek safer accommodation, amidst growing needs for shelter, food, and basic services. Authorities face a significant challenge in providing alternative housing for those affected, particularly as the assessment of losses and the cleanup of debris continue. In addition, the government is working to implement resettlement and rehabilitation plans for the most severely impacted areas.
The harsh weather conditions exacerbated the suffering of survivors, as heavy rains damaged some of the temporary shelters where families who lost their homes had taken refuge. As a result, relief teams intensified their efforts to provide for the needs of those affected. Venezuelan authorities, in cooperation with emergency teams, are working to expedite rescue operations and the recovery of victims, as well as providing aid to survivors. Meanwhile, there are concerns that the death toll will continue to rise as search operations progress in the most severely damaged areas. Reconstruction of the affected areas and the provision of permanent housing for those displaced represent the most significant challenges facing the government in the coming period. This comes amidst the scale of the devastation and the growing number of families in urgent need of support to ensure their return to a stable life.
