A delicate embalming process
After her death, her body underwent meticulous embalming for display in a grand monument planned in her honor.
However, a military coup that overthrew President Perón in 1955 completely altered the course of events.
The new military authorities believed that Eva’s body could become a symbol,
rallying supporters of the ousted president and fueling popular opposition, so they decided to conceal it.
The body was moved between several locations within Argentina in a highly secretive operation
before being smuggled out of the country under a false identity.
For years, the body rested in a cemetery in Milan, Italy, where it was buried under an assumed name, away from public view.

Special security measures
In 1971, 16 years after her disappearance, the military authorities decided to return her body to Juan Perón,
who was living in exile in Spain. He kept it in his home until he returned to Argentina years later.
After Peron return to power and his subsequent death, Eva Perón’s body was
moved in 1976 to her family’s cemetery in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
She was buried in a heavily fortified tomb at a considerable depth,
with special security measures in place to prevent any further desecration.
