Washington, DC – The United Nations has warned that violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank has reached unprecedented levels, emphasizing that the escalating attacks against Palestinians are exacerbating tensions and threatening to further deteriorate the security and humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.
The international organization explained that recent months have witnessed a significant increase in the number of attacks targeting Palestinian civilians and their property, including attacks on homes and farms, the destruction of crops, and incidents of intimidation and physical assaults that have resulted in deaths, injuries, and the displacement of numerous families from their homes.
The United Nations called on Israeli authorities to take immediate and effective measures to protect civilians, prevent the recurrence of such attacks, and hold those responsible accountable under international law. It stressed that continued impunity contributes to the escalation of violence and undermines the prospects for stability.
The organization also emphasized the need to respect international humanitarian law and international human rights law, urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that could further escalate tensions, at a time when international calls continue for a resumption of political efforts aimed at containing the crisis and achieving peace in the region.
