San Diego, USA – Abu Dhabi Biobank, the joint strategic initiative between the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and M42, has signed a cooperation agreement with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Abu Dhabi Biobank – Al Oyoun Bank constitutes a qualitative milestone in developing the infrastructure for corneal transplantation and preserving vital samples. Expanding the scope of medical services in accordance with the highest international standards. It allows patients in the region to access corneal transplants more efficiently and sustainably.
Direct and reliable access
The partnership aims to provide direct and reliable access to corneal transplantation for UAE patients by establishing the first local eye bank. This reduces dependence on imported tissues, enhances self-sufficiency, and provides advanced treatment options that improve patients’ quality of life.
The bank will remove corneal tissue from donors, treat it, preserve it, and distribute it in accordance with the highest international standards. This establishes a safe and sustainable local supply chain and reduces logistical challenges and supply instability. It accelerates tissue supply, enhances quality assurance, traceability, and improves therapeutic outcomes.
Developing advanced infrastructure
Abu Dhabi Biobank – Al Oyoun Bank will cooperate with the National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues “Hayat”. In carrying out procedures for removing, treating, preserving and distributing corneal tissue.
