Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, strongly condemned the riots and attacks that targeted the UAE embassy
and the headquarters of its head of mission in the Syrian capital, Damascus,
describing what happened as unacceptable behavior and a clear violation of diplomatic norms.
Official Gulf condemnation
Al-Badawi stressed in a statement that the attacks on the embassy headquarters and the attempt to vandalize property,
in addition to the insults to the national symbols of the UAE,
represent a serious transgression that calls for a firm stance from the concerned authorities.
Demands for accountability from those responsible
The Secretary-General called on the relevant authorities in Syria to take the necessary
legal measures to hold all those involved in these events accountable,
stressing the need to ensure there is no impunity in such incidents that affect diplomatic work.
Emphasis on protecting diplomatic missions
Al-Badawi stressed the importance of strengthening the protection of diplomatic missions and their premises,
in accordance with international conventions and norms governing diplomatic work,
to ensure the safety of their staff and safeguard the sanctity of official premises.
This condemnation comes amid escalating Arab reactions to the attack on the UAE embassy in Damascus,
and growing calls for respect for international law and the guarantee of the security of diplomatic missions.
