Wellington, New Zealand – The New Zealand Football Association has announced it is withdrawing its support for Gianni Infantino’s candidacy for the FIFA presidency in the upcoming elections, scheduled for 2027. This move is a further step that could increase the pressure on the FIFA president.

The New Zealand Football Association explained in an official statement that its decision came after reviewing a number of recent developments and decisions by FIFA. It indicated that some of these actions had led to a decline in trust and increased division within the global football community.

New Zealand Football calls for an independent review

The New Zealand Football Association has called for an independent review of FIFA’s progress in developing its program. This review aims to examine and detail the decisions and actions taken in the past.

He stressed that conducting this review is an important step towards restoring trust. He also emphasized the need to give member associations the opportunity to demand greater governance, accountability, and transparency within FIFA.

Another blow to Infantino

The New Zealand Football Association emphasized that adhering to these principles is essential to maintaining public trust in the governance of world football, particularly given the growing calls for transparency in FIFA’s decision-making processes.

New Zealand’s decision comes at a time when Infantino is facing increasing pressure over a number of recent issues and decisions. The withdrawal of support also represents another blow to his position ahead of the 2027 FIFA presidential election.
