New Delhi, India – Seven people were killed and 13 others injured in an accident inside a tunnel under construction at a hydroelectric power project in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. Water and debris leaked into the work site, trapping several workers inside the tunnel.
Rescue and emergency teams rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the report. The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, rescue teams continued search and rescue operations inside the tunnel.
The incident comes amid the risks facing infrastructure and energy projects in India’s mountainous regions, particularly during the monsoon season. During this season, some areas experience heavy rainfall that can cause landslides and flash floods.
Indian authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the accident. In addition, a review of safety procedures at the project site is underway, with particular attention to the extent to which worker protection standards were being met during tunnel excavation.
