London, UK – The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced on Friday that an oil tanker was attacked by a drone while transiting the sensitive Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. The attack resulted in minor damage to the vessel’s hull. Meanwhile, heightened security tensions persist in regional shipping lanes. This is due to the recent military confrontations between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other in late February.

Details of the attack and the safety of the ship’s crew

In an official statement, the British Maritime Safety Authority (MSA) explained that it had received reports from military authorities. These reports indicated that an oil tanker was targeted by a drone while sailing out of the Strait of Hormuz. The statement also confirmed that the damage to the vessel from the explosion was minor. The MSA noted that initial reports confirmed the safety of all crew members and that no injuries were reported. Furthermore, no oil spill or environmental damage was detected in the waters of the strait. However, the MSA did not disclose the official identity of the targeted tanker. It also did not reveal the party responsible for launching the drone.

Iranian control over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

This latest attack comes amid a complex situation on the ground and in the maritime sphere. Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz since the outbreak of hostilities. These hostilities followed the initial US and Israeli strikes on February 28. Furthermore, Iranian authorities are currently maintaining strict control over maritime traffic. All commercial vessels and oil tankers are required to transit the strait only after prior coordination with Iran. They must also sail via a precise shipping lane that runs exclusively along the Iranian coast. Tehran also intends to impose a “service fee” on vessels wishing to use this strategic waterway. This move is being met with strong opposition from the United States.

Security recommendations and warnings for international navigation

In light of these concerning developments, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has urged all merchant vessels and mariners transiting the region to exercise extreme caution. UKMTO also advised ship crews to immediately report any suspicious activity or potential threats. This advice aims to ensure the safety of navigation and prevent any risks to the lives of seafarers. Moreover, it seeks to avoid disruption to global energy supply chains in one of the world’s most vital trade arteries.
