Kyiv, Ukraine – The Ukrainian Air Force has again admitted its failure to intercept any ballistic missiles during last night’s attack on the country. This is yet another indication of the strain on Ukraine’s air defense system, amid growing criticism of its shortage of interceptor missiles and its declining ability to counter ballistic missile attacks.

Statistics of the latest attack

On Saturday morning, the Ukrainian Air Force published statistics on its Telegram channel detailing the number of missiles and drones launched toward Ukrainian territory, as well as those intercepted. The statistics did not include any successful interceptions of ballistic missiles. Furthermore, the Air Force did not specify the number of ballistic missiles launched during the attack. This raises renewed questions about Kyiv’s ability to counter this type of weapon. Ukraine relies on advanced Western air defense systems, but their capacity to intercept ballistic missiles remains limited compared to other types of missiles and drones.

Russia announces targeting of facilities in Kyiv

In response, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that its forces had conducted a mass strike using precision-guided ground-launched weapons and long-range drones. The strike targeted a transport infrastructure facility and a logistics center in and around Kyiv during the night. Moscow maintains that its operations primarily target military and industrial facilities linked to Ukraine’s defense capabilities. It also targets supply depots, warehouses, and facilities used for storing and transporting equipment, ammunition, and fuel. Recent weeks have seen an intensification of Russian attacks, particularly around the capital and in other areas. This is part of Moscow’s efforts to disrupt supply lines and reduce the Ukrainian forces’ ability to acquire reserves and military equipment.

Concerns about Ukrainian air defense

The new statistics come amid growing domestic criticism of the performance of Ukraine’s air defense system. The Ukrainian Air Force stopped publishing certain statistics on intercepted Russian missiles at the beginning of August, after previous data showed that a number of missiles had not been shot down. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently acknowledged that the Ukrainian armed forces are struggling to intercept ballistic missiles due to a shortage of air defense missiles. Igor Chernyv, head of the National Security, Defense, and Intelligence Committee in the Ukrainian parliament, described the state of the country’s air defense systems as the worst it has been since the start of the conflict.

Warnings of a severe shortage of objections

On August 12, Ukrainian MP Anna Skorokhod stated that her country was facing a “catastrophic” situation due to a lack of air defense systems, noting that the armed forces had stopped regularly reporting the number of missiles they had intercepted. These statements increase pressure on Kyiv to acquire more air defense systems and interceptor missiles from its Western allies, especially given Russia’s continued use of ballistic missiles and long-range drones.

The Black Sea is among the targets of the attacks

Russian attacks are not limited to the capital. Moscow is also targeting Ukrainian military supply chains across the Black Sea, with an increasing focus on key ports, including Odessa, Chornomorsk, and Mykolaiv. These ports are of strategic importance due to their role in the movement of supplies and goods. Moscow claims that striking facilities linked to military and logistical infrastructure aims to weaken the Ukrainian army’s ability to continue operations. As the attacks continue and the use of ballistic missiles and drones increases, strengthening air defenses remains one of the most significant challenges facing Ukraine. Kyiv is attempting to acquire more interceptor missiles and Western systems capable of protecting cities and vital infrastructure.
