Juba, South Sudan – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has reinforced its security patrols in and around the internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Bentiu, Unity State. This follows a security incident on August 19 that resulted in deaths and injuries among civilians and local security personnel.

UN efforts to contain the crisis and calm the situation

The mission stated that its increased field presence is part of its ongoing efforts to prevent a resurgence of violence and protect unarmed civilians. Simultaneously, the mission is working through intensive communication channels with state authorities, community leaders, security forces, and youth representatives, with the aim of reducing tensions and restoring calm and stability to the region.

Calls for congratulations and prioritizing dialogue

For her part, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Anita Kiki Gbeho, called on all parties to refrain from confrontation and to immediately engage in dialogue to address contentious issues. Gbeho stressed the paramount importance of protecting civilians from further harm and suffering, especially given that the camp’s residents have already endured the long-term consequences of displacement and insecurity.

Continued protective presence and ensuring the protection of civilians

These intensified field movements come amid serious concerns that current tensions could lead to further clashes, threatening the safety and security of residents inside and around the camp. The UN mission confirmed it will maintain a reinforced protective presence around the camp to deter any further violence. It also aims to provide a safer environment that allows affected communities to move away from the new cycle of conflict.
