In remarks broadcast on Iranian television before his departure from Tehran to Kyrgyzstan to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, Pezeshkian explained that his country had sent a clear message to the world that it does not seek war.
“Our non-seekership of war is a clear message we have conveyed to the world so far,” Pezeshkian said, “but we will never stand idly by in the face of any aggression, and we will respond decisively to aggressors.” The Iranian president also warned of the repercussions of escalating tensions. He emphasized that the ongoing instability and turmoil in the region is not in the interest of any of its countries, but rather poses serious security and economic challenges to everyone.
The roots of escalation and reciprocal military operations
This firm political stance coincides with a security escalation that began last night when US forces announced they had targeted what they described as “Iranian missile launch sites” in the Strait of Hormuz. This is the first such military development in weeks. In response to this strike, which targeted Iran’s Larak Island, Iranian television reported early this morning that the armed forces had launched a barrage of missiles from various locations within the country toward specific targets in the region. In a further development that heightened tensions, US President Donald Trump announced early this morning that Iran’s Kharg Island had been targeted and completely destroyed, reduced to rubble. He also supported his announcement with a post accompanied by a video generated using artificial intelligence. This signals a new and more dangerous phase of direct confrontation between the two countries.
