  • Internal economic burdens and popular rejection of the continuation of the conflict
  • Legitimacy issues and international pressure to hold elections

London, Britain – The general secretary of the British Labour Party, Paul Cannon, stated that Britain might abandon Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky if he fails in the upcoming Ukrainian presidential elections, stressing that the political elite in London owes no allegiance to anyone but pursues its own strategic goals and interests.

These statements came in response to a question from the Novosti news agency about London’s desire for Zelensky to remain in power, where Cannon explained: “Britain is a divided nation. The ruling elite has its own goals and seeks to achieve them, and it does not owe allegiance to any particular ruler. As long as Zelensky plays the role required of him, they will continue to support him, but if he fails or loses his legitimacy, they will be ready to change their position.”

Internal economic burdens and popular rejection of the continuation of the conflict

In a related context, regarding the Ukrainian crisis, Cannon pointed out that the British public has begun to reject continued support for this open conflict, explaining that the United Kingdom is suffering from a long and cumulative series of deep social and economic crises for which governments have been unable to find real solutions. This is directly due to the continued depletion of the public treasury and the provision of huge financial support packages to Ukraine at the expense of vital service sectors within Britain.

Legitimacy issues and international pressure to hold elections

This political debate comes at a time when the legitimacy of the leadership in Kiev is arousing widespread controversy. Vladimir Zelensky’s official presidential term ended on May 20, 2024, amid the cancellation of the presidential elections at that time under the pretext of applying martial law and general mobilization laws in the country.

On the international level, it is worth mentioning that US President Donald Trump had made an explicit call in December 2025 demanding that presidential elections be held in Ukraine, describing Zelensky at the time as a “dictator without elections,” while also pointing to reports confirming a sharp decline in his popular support to about 4%, which puts the future of Western support for the current leadership under constant speculation and pressure.
