Rabat, Morocco – In preparation for the upcoming legislative elections, the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior held two separate meetings with leaders of political parties. The meetings were dedicated to reviewing the organizational and legislative arrangements for the elections scheduled for September 23, 2026.
Central committee to ensure the integrity of elections
The Ministry announced, in accordance with royal directives, the activation of a central committee to monitor the elections, chaired by the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, and including the Public Prosecutor. This committee aims to ensure the integrity and fairness of the electoral process at all its stages. Furthermore, to guarantee comprehensive territorial coverage, regional and provincial committees will be established, comprising governors, prefects, and royal prosecutors. These committees aim to ensure the integrity of the process at the local level.
Digitizing nominations and simplifying procedures
The Ministry reviewed with political stakeholders the new procedure for submitting candidacy applications, which will be done via a dedicated online platform. To ensure a smooth process, the Ministry of the Interior decided to close the digital submission period 24 hours before the deadline of September 9, 2026. Candidates will also have the opportunity to conduct a digital simulation of the submission process between July 20 and 27. Candidates can participate either using their own devices or at designated centers within the prefectures and provinces.
Facilities for the Moroccan community
In response to feedback from political parties, the Minister of the Interior announced the complete digitization of the “voting proxy” process for members of the Moroccan diaspora. Laftit confirmed that the registration and issuance of these proxies will be done digitally, without the need for any administrative authentication (signature verification). This will facilitate the exercise of voting rights for Moroccans abroad.
Campaign financing
The meeting also addressed the regulatory requirements concerning state contributions to financing the election campaigns of political parties participating in the House of Representatives elections. Party leaders expressed their appreciation for these proactive measures, affirming their commitment to ensuring the success of this national event. These preparations come at a time when Moroccan authorities are intensifying their efforts to guarantee the transparency of the vote. The authorities are also working to expand the digital transformation to encompass all stages of the electoral process, from voter registration to candidate submission. This is being done to strengthen the democratic gains that the Kingdom has accumulated in organizing its elections.
