Washington, DC – Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi held extensive talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday afternoon, Washington time. The discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries and addressed concerning developments in the region.
De-escalation and commitment to a ceasefire
The two ministers discussed international efforts to end the regional escalation and restore calm. Safadi stressed the need for Iran to abide by the ceasefire agreement with the United States. He emphasized the importance of reaching a comprehensive solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict. This solution must also guarantee freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law, thus ensuring lasting security and stability. The two ministers also condemned the recent Iranian attacks targeting Jordan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
Regional issues and the Gaza Strip
The two sides reviewed the situation in Gaza. Safadi stressed the need to ensure the full implementation of all provisions of US President Donald Trump’s plan. He also emphasized the importance of intensifying international efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution. For his part, Minister Rubio commended the Kingdom’s pivotal role in efforts to promote security and stability in the region. He also expressed his appreciation for the level of coordination between the two countries.
Strengthening relations with Congress
To strengthen bilateral relations, Safadi held a series of high-level meetings in the US Congress. These included meetings with Senator Jim Risch, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the committee’s ranking Democrat. He also met with Representative Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Representative Gregory Meeks, the ranking Democrat on that committee.
These meetings discussed ways to develop Jordanian-American cooperation in various fields and coordinate positions on current regional issues. Al-Safadi’s visit comes at a sensitive time in the region. This reflects the keenness of Amman and Washington to continue close coordination to support stability and confront common security and political challenges.
