Beirut, Lebanon – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed that his country supports renewing the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the south if requested by the Lebanese government. This stance underscores France’s ongoing diplomatic backing for the UN force’s role in maintaining regional stability and supporting the Lebanese state amid escalating security tensions.

Lebanese Adherence to Mandate Extension

Lebanese authorities are moving to officially request an extension of UNIFIL’s mission as its current mandate nears expiration, with Beirut viewing the international presence as a vital stabilizing factor. The UN force plays a crucial role in monitoring conditions on the ground and supporting the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions in Southern Lebanon.

Furthermore, the Lebanese government maintains that UNIFIL’s continued presence directly assists Lebanese Army units and coordinates field measures to assert state authority. In addition, the force provides a key diplomatic communication channel to prevent direct military friction and observe security compliance along the Lebanese-Israeli border.

International Discussions and French Role in the Security Council

Concurrently, UN member states are conducting intensive discussions regarding UNIFIL’s future operational framework and mechanisms for the upcoming phase. These consultations involve proposals to reinforce the force’s operational efficiency or adjust certain mission parameters to adapt to evolving ground challenges.

Ultimately, France plays a key role as the primary drafter of resolutions on Lebanon within the UN Security Council, leading diplomatic efforts to secure consensus around extending the mandate. Securing UNIFIL’s future remains a strategic anchor to prevent border tensions from escalating into wider confrontation and to ensure lasting stability in Southern Lebanon.
