Madrid, Spain – Twelve foreign nationals have died in wildfires that swept through the Andalusia region of southern Spain, fueled by a severe heatwave and strong winds that caused the flames to spread rapidly, prompting authorities to declare a state of maximum alert.
Spanish authorities stated that firefighting and civil defense teams are continuing their intensive efforts to control the fires and prevent them from reaching populated areas, while large-scale evacuations have been carried out, affecting thousands of residents and tourists, to ensure their safety.
Initial reports indicate that all the victims were foreign nationals. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the incident and working to identify some of the victims, while search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas.
These fires are among the most intense to hit Spain this year, amid warnings of continued high temperatures and an increased risk of further fires in the coming days. This has prompted authorities to reinforce the deployment of emergency teams and firefighting aircraft.
