Brussels, Belgium – Several European countries are preparing to deploy their largest firefighting and rapid intervention force in history. This comes in an attempt to contain rapidly spreading wildfires that have erupted amid a severe heatwave gripping the continent. Warnings are being issued that the fires will spread further in the coming days.
Large areas of southern and central Europe are experiencing record-breaking temperatures. This has led to a significant increase in the number of fires, particularly in forests and rural areas. The fires are proving difficult to control due to dry winds and prolonged drought.
According to EU officials, the emergency plan includes the deployment of thousands of firefighters. In addition, specialized firefighting aircraft and water-dropping helicopters will be used. The European Civil Protection Mechanism, which coordinates efforts among member states in cases of major natural disasters, will also be activated.
Authorities confirmed that some of the hardest-hit countries have deployed additional firefighting and military reinforcements to assist in evacuations. This is aimed at protecting residential areas near forests, amid fears that the fires could reach populated towns.
Local governments have also issued urgent warnings to residents to avoid forested areas and adhere to safety measures. Temporary shelters have been opened for those affected by the fires, which have forced hundreds of families to evacuate their homes.
Climate experts believe that the increasing frequency of heat waves in Europe in recent years is a major factor in the spread of wildfires. They consider the current situation on the continent a serious indicator of the accelerating effects of climate change, which are making summers more severe and complex than before.
Firefighters are continuing their intensive efforts to control the blazes. Meanwhile, weather forecasts predict the heat wave will persist for several more days, making it even more difficult to fully control the situation in the near future.
