  • Balances of power and regional alliances

Tehran, Iran – The issue of maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz is at the forefront of the international political scene. Informed sources told the Associated Press that the United States is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to push Iran toward agreeing to fully reopen the strait to commercial shipping. This move is a top priority for Washington, as Iranian control of this strategic waterway is a major point of contention that is hindering the stability of global energy markets.

Negotiations are on hold.

The US moves come at a time when communication channels between Washington and Tehran remain temporarily suspended. US President Donald Trump has given Iran a week to complete the funeral rites for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. While awaiting the resumption of talks that could outline a new approach to dealing with the Iranian nuclear program, the US administration is seeking a settlement that would permanently end the current regional conflicts.

On the alliance front, the Strait of Hormuz is expected to feature prominently on the agenda of the NATO summit, which begins this week in Ankara. A senior US official explained that the security of this vital waterway will be a key item in the discussions among NATO leaders. These discussions aim to ensure the smooth flow of global supplies.

Balances of power and regional alliances

Meanwhile, these moves coincided with a reaffirmation of the strength of the US-Israeli relationship. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that Washington and Tel Aviv represent each other’s greatest allies. For his part, the Israeli army chief of staff declared that Hezbollah had been “significantly weakened” after its setbacks in recent confrontations. Furthermore, he described the strategic alliance with the United States as being at its strongest point in history.

In response, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reiterated Tehran’s position, emphasizing that “the enemy has realized that peace in the region is impossible except through the path of the Islamic Republic.” While political rhetoric and military maneuvers intertwine, attention remains focused on developments in Tehran following the conclusion of the mourning period. The question remains whether these developments will pave the way for a return to the negotiating table. Alternatively, the issue of the Strait of Hormuz will remain hostage to escalating geopolitical tensions in the region.
