New Delhi, India – Six people have died and others have been injured as a result of heavy monsoon rains that have swept across several Indian states. The rains have caused residential buildings to collapse and widespread flooding that has disrupted transportation. They have also inflicted significant damage on infrastructure.
Indian authorities reported that the torrential rains caused a number of buildings and houses to collapse. Meanwhile, rescue and civil defense teams are continuing their search for missing persons believed to be trapped under the rubble. There are fears that the death toll could rise in the coming hours.
The floods inundated major roads and railway lines, disrupting traffic and delaying train services. Additionally, some areas experienced power outages and communication disruptions due to the severe weather.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued warnings of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days. Landslides and flash floods are possible in mountainous and low-lying areas. The department urged residents to avoid dangerous areas and follow the instructions of local authorities.
For its part, the Indian government deployed additional disaster response teams to the worst-affected areas. Shelters were also set up to accommodate families forced to leave their homes. Food and medical aid were provided to those affected.
India experiences heavy rainfall annually during the monsoon season, causing floods and landslides. This results in significant loss of life and property, particularly in densely populated states with fragile infrastructure.
