Moscow, Russia – Russia has expressed grave concern over NATO’s military buildup in the vicinity of its territory. Russia asserted that the alliance is increasingly relying on offensive-style exercises.
Russian warnings of “offensive scenarios”
Vladislav Maslennikov, director of the European Affairs Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced that NATO exercises near Russia’s borders are steadily expanding. Maslennikov added that “the growth in the scope of the alliance’s exercises, and the increasing use of offensive scenarios within them, is striking.” He noted that this raises serious security concerns for Moscow.
Successive military maneuvers along the border
These warnings come amid heightened military activity in Russia’s vicinity. The “Breze” naval exercises recently commenced, involving the Bulgarian Navy and NATO units. Simultaneously, Armenia hosted the “Eagle Partner 2026” exercises in mid-July, which included military units from the United States, France, and Greece. Moscow views these moves as an attempt to expand Western influence in its traditional sphere of influence.
Deterrence or militarization of the continent?
Russia is closely monitoring this activity, which it describes as “unprecedented,” along its western borders. It considers the alliance’s pretext of “deterring Russian aggression” to be merely a cover for expanding its military initiatives. It also stated that this reflects the militarization of the European continent.
Moscow’s position on dialogue with the alliance
As tensions on the ground escalate, the Russian diplomat affirmed that Moscow remains open to dialogue with NATO. However, he stressed that this must be based on “equal rights.” The Russian Foreign Ministry clarified that a prerequisite for restoring any stability lies in the West abandoning its policies of intimidation and militarizing borders. It also warned that continuing down this path will only further complicate international relations. These statements reflect the intensity of geopolitical competition. Moscow seeks to limit Western military expansion and has asserted that it will take all necessary measures to protect its national security. This comes in response to what it describes as the alliance’s “provocative” actions near its territory.
