Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump said the United States is very close to reaching an agreement with Iran, noting that only two points remain unresolved in the negotiations. He added, however, that these are not major obstacles to finalizing the agreement. In media statements, Trump explained that any potential agreement must include a clear clause guaranteeing that Iran will not develop, purchase, or possess nuclear weapons at any time.
Strict terms for the agreement
The US president affirmed that Washington seeks to include binding guarantees in any agreement with Tehran that would definitively prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons. He emphasized that this condition forms the basis of the US position in the ongoing negotiations. He added that any future understanding would mean a shift in relations between the two countries toward cooperation, with joint efforts to address outstanding nuclear issues.
Threat of military option
In contrast, Trump warned that if no agreement is reached, the United States will resort to military action “very forcefully,” as he put it. He emphasized that his country will wait until the moment of implementation before taking any action on the ground.
From conflict to conditional cooperation
The US president indicated that reaching an agreement would change the nature of the relationship with Iran, transforming it into a partnership in implementing the agreement’s provisions, including the handling and disposal of nuclear materials according to agreed-upon mechanisms. These statements come amidst escalating diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran. They also come against a backdrop of significant differences in positions regarding the Iranian nuclear program and the future of sanctions imposed on Tehran.
