  • A sharp split within the Labour Party

London, England – British press reports have revealed dramatic developments shaking the political system in the United Kingdom. The Daily Mail reported that Prime Minister Keir Starmer has informed his inner circle of his intention to resign. This unexpected move comes in the wake of a severe political crisis that has recently gripped the country, a crisis that threatens to end his tenure as head of government.

Allied pressure and the Battle of Mackerfield

The newspaper quoted prominent political commentator Dan Hodges as saying that Starmer had made a “final decision” to resign. However, the Prime Minister intends to carry out this step on his own terms and in a manner that ensures a dignified exit. He also seeks to avoid a bitter public battle for the leadership of the ruling Labour Party. Sources indicated that a precise timetable for his departure is currently being drawn up. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s office and the party have remained completely silent, issuing no official comment to either confirm or deny the reports.

Meanwhile, sources revealed that Starmer’s top allies are exerting intense pressure on him, urging him to proceed cautiously and not formally announce his resignation before the initial results of the by-election in the Mackerfield constituency of Greater Manchester are released. The mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, is running in that constituency. This pressure stems from fears of early and potentially violent internal conflicts erupting between supporters and opponents of Burnham. Burnham is seen as a strong and likely successor to Starmer, as his victory and entry into Parliament would pave the way, both legally and by convention, for him to become Prime Minister in the future.

A sharp split within the Labour Party

These rapid developments follow the recent local elections in which the Labour Party suffered a crushing defeat. This has triggered a widespread political crisis in the United Kingdom. Multiple media reports indicate that more than 90 Labour MPs have publicly supported Starmer’s resignation, unable to tolerate the current chaos. This parliamentary rebellion reflects an unprecedented depth of internal division and the Prime Minister’s loss of the parliamentary and political support necessary to continue leading the government and the country.
