Washington, DC – Under intense pressure from the Republican Party, US President Donald Trump backed down from the idea of establishing a government fund to compensate those accused in the January 6, 2021, attacks, announcing that his administration had officially agreed not to create such a fund. Speaking to reporters at Camp David, Trump explained that administration officials had “agreed not to create a fund” to compensate his political allies, but added that he personally did not agree with the decision.

Previous post and defense of the accused in the Capitol

This reversal came just hours after Trump posted on social media that those prosecuted by the Justice Department for their involvement in the violent attack on the Capitol building “are still suffering, many of their lives have been shattered, and I felt they should be compensated for what they went through.” This stance reflects Trump’s continued sympathy for those prosecuted in those events and his desire to support them despite the significant political challenges.

Republican senators’ requirements for nominating Attorney General

Trump’s announcement that he was abandoning the idea coincided with decisive stances taken by Republican Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The senators explicitly stated that they would not support Todd Blanch’s nomination for Attorney General without a written commitment to reject the creation of the fund, forcing the administration to concede to these strict partisan conditions for approving key government appointments.
