Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his deep appreciation to US President Donald Trump following the latter’s announcement of a halt to military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, known as “Operation Freedom.”
Sharif described the decision as reflecting “courageous leadership” and a wise response to the demands of the current situation. He also emphasized that the timing of the announcement was crucial in preventing further escalation in one of the world’s most important waterways.
Appreciation for mediation and regional efforts
In a post on the X platform, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that this shift in the US position came in response to the demands and appeals made by Pakistan and its allies, foremost among them the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Sharif specifically commended the diplomatic efforts of the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He also noted that this close cooperation directly contributed to enhancing the prospects for regional peace and reconciliation during this sensitive period.
Commitment to diplomatic solutions
The Prime Minister stressed that Pakistan remains firmly committed to the principles of diplomacy, affirming his country’s support for all international efforts aimed at promoting restraint and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
He noted that constructive dialogue is the only way to guarantee the national security of nations and protect the interests of their people. He added that this can be achieved without resorting to military confrontation, which threatens the stability of the global economy.
Aspirations for a permanent agreement
Shahbaz Sharif concluded his remarks by expressing his hope that the international community would capitalize on the current momentum to transform this suspension into a permanent and comprehensive agreement. He emphasized that the stability of the Strait of Hormuz is a cornerstone for ensuring lasting peace in the region and beyond. The Pakistani Prime Minister noted that his country would continue to work with its international partners to ensure the region remains an arena of cooperation and prosperity, rather than conflict. Meanwhile, observers believe this announcement opens the door to new security arrangements that guarantee freedom of navigation while addressing the concerns of all regional parties.
