Moscow, Russia – The Kremlin has called on the European Union to consider allegations of Ukraine’s involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream gas pipeline bombings when discussing Kyiv’s EU accession. This comes after German prosecutors indicted a former Ukrainian officer in connection with the case.
The Kremlin links the issue to Ukraine’s membership
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the issue is of great importance to EU member states. He also asserted that any discussion regarding the future of relations with Ukraine or its accession to the bloc must take into account the accusations related to the Nord Stream pipeline explosions.
He added that Moscow views the incident as an attack on vital European infrastructure. Therefore, he urged member states to consider these developments in their political discussions.
German charges against former Ukrainian officer
Peskov’s remarks came after the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced charges against a former Ukrainian military officer, identified as Serhiy K., for his suspected involvement in the Nord Stream pipeline bombings. The charges also indicated that he was acting on behalf of Ukrainian government officials.
The Nord Stream pipeline bombings, which occurred in September 2022, are among the most prominent security incidents that have sparked widespread debate about the security of energy infrastructure in Europe.
Kyiv denies having sufficient information
For its part, the Ukrainian authorities confirmed that they do not possess sufficient information to provide a detailed response to the accusations made by the German prosecutor’s office.
These developments come as the European Union continues to discuss the future of its relations with Ukraine. This is taking place amidst the ongoing war with Russia and growing debate surrounding security and political issues related to the conflict.
