Tehran, Iran – Iran began the funeral ceremony for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, after his body was laid to rest in the Grand Imam Khomeini Chapel in Tehran. This marks the start of a week of official and popular farewell ceremonies, which will conclude with his burial in the city of Mashhad next Thursday. This is taking place in the presence of Iranian officials, foreign delegations, and strict security measures.
Ceremonies spanning Iran and Iraq
Khamenei’s funeral procession will include several stops, beginning in Tehran and then moving to the city of Qom. Following this, ceremonies will be held in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala. His body will then be laid to rest in Mashhad, near the shrine of Imam Reza. A number of foreign officials have arrived in Tehran to participate in the mourning ceremonies, including Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Pakistani Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi, along with other delegations.
Security measures and a show of popular support
The Iranian capital witnessed a heavy security presence, with the army, police, and Basij forces deployed in large numbers on main streets. This coincided with the arrival of large crowds of mourners. Mourning flags were raised in Iranian cities. Coffins were placed on a special platform inside the prayer hall, amidst religious and public ceremonies. The authorities considered this a reaffirmation of the state’s unity and the continuity of its institutions.
Internal challenges despite the atmosphere of mourning
Khamenei’s funeral comes at a time when Iran faces mounting political and economic challenges, including ongoing international sanctions and the lingering effects of the recent war. Furthermore, there is a growing sense of internal division, as noted by observers. Despite this, the authorities are attempting to project an image of national unity through large-scale ceremonies. Transportation, schools, and mosques have been prepared to accommodate mourners arriving from across the country. The events will continue until the burial in Mashhad.
