Athens, Greece – A formal ceremony, marked by military protocol, took place today at the Hellenic Navy Headquarters. During the ceremony, the duties of the official spokesperson for the Hellenic National Defence General Staff were officially handed over. In a scene of great symbolic and professional significance, Lieutenant Colonel Maria Kilios assumed her new post, succeeding Colonel Spyros Aslanis. She thus became the first woman in the history of the Hellenic military to hold this sensitive position.
Breaking down barriers in the military establishment
The ceremony was held in the presence of the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Houpis, who delivered a brief address. In his remarks, he praised Lieutenant Colonel Kilio’s distinguished career.
General Houpis emphasized that Lieutenant Colonel Maria’s selection for this position reflects her high level of competence. He also noted that she “has successfully developed and excelled in a professional field that has long been dominated by men.” This represents a significant step towards strengthening the role of women in leadership and representative positions within the Hellenic military.
Honoring and bidding farewell
During the ceremony, General Hobbes made sure to acknowledge the efforts of his predecessor, Colonel Spyros Aslanis. He presented him with commemorative gifts in recognition of his contributions during his tenure.
The Chief of Staff also extended special thanks to the journalists accredited to the Ministry, expressing his appreciation for their professional and exemplary cooperation over the past three years, during which he led the Ministry’s media relations efforts.
This move comes as the Greek military seeks to modernize its media communication mechanisms. The appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Kylios is seen as a sign of the institution’s openness to female leadership.
The new spokesperson faces important tasks related to enhancing the military’s public image and increasing transparency. She will also be responsible for communicating with national and international media outlets in light of the rapidly evolving regional challenges facing Greece.
