Moscow, Russia – Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian President’s Special Envoy for Investment and Economic Cooperation and Chairman of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, announced that a regular meeting is scheduled for June. He will meet with US envoys Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner. This meeting is part of ongoing communication efforts between the two sides despite the complexities of the current international landscape.
In an interview with the Berliner Zeitung, Dmitriev confirmed the meeting would take place, without specifying a precise date. However, he emphasized that the primary role in maintaining world peace remains with politicians and diplomats. Business leaders and economists, he asserted, are limited to contributing to the strengthening of economic cooperation and opening up prospects for shared prosperity.
Mediation in Ukraine has stalled
Regarding efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that mediation efforts concerning Ukraine have been stalled since February. This coincided with the outbreak of US and Israeli military confrontations with Iran.
However, Peskov clarified that Wittkov and Kushner are maintaining contact with both the Russian and Ukrainian sides through available channels. He also affirmed Moscow’s readiness to receive them at any time, although no specific date has yet been set for their visit.
Peskov also denied any plans for a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump. He noted that the Kremlin had not received any notification regarding the call, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as “positive,” with US envoys, during which Zelensky expressed optimism about their readiness to work toward a solution to the conflict in the coming weeks.
Russia’s position on European mediation
Regarding European efforts to intervene in the mediation process, Moscow categorically rejected them, describing European participation as “unacceptable.”
Peskov explained that Russia’s rejection stems from the Europeans’ focus on perpetuating the war rather than supporting peace talks. He added that Moscow also objects to attempts to impose preconditions for any dialogue.
These developments come as the international community awaits the outcome of the June meetings between Dmitriev and the US envoys. The question remains whether economic channels can revive the stalled peace process.
