Moscow – The Russian Foreign Ministry, through Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, announced that Moscow has received no official requests from Britain regarding the resumption of political dialogue or bilateral contacts. Consequently, these official clarifications shed light on the uncertainty surrounding news reports indicating London’s interest in reopening direct communication channels.

Furthermore, Grushko emphasized that Moscow remains unaware of any formal initiative from the UK Foreign Office or Defence Ministry, while reiterating Russia’s willingness to engage in dialogue should London present a serious request. As a result, diplomatic observers await official clarification to determine the authenticity of Britain’s intent and potential coordination mechanisms.

Escalation Risks and Severed Communication Channels

On the other hand, Russia’s statements came in response to a report by The Times claiming London is considering resuming high-level military dialogue to prevent unintended escalation. Additionally, the lack of direct communication channels between military leaders since September 2022 has raised growing concerns regarding potential field miscalculations amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

Consequently, Moscow placed the burden of severed relations on London, referencing the UK’s decision to expel the Russian military attaché in May 2024, which disrupted traditional lines of communication. Ultimately, Russian officials maintain that any effort to restore dialogue must originate from British initiatives demonstrating concrete intent.

Finally, Russia’s denial highlights the deep diplomatic standstill characterizing relations between Moscow and London. Ultimately, clear official proposals and mutual political will remain the essential prerequisites for restoring communication and managing military risks.
