Damascus, Syria – The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced the implementation of a series of field measures to address the consequences of the rising water levels of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor Governorate. This comes as part of efforts to protect the population, property, and infrastructure from any potential risks.
The Ministry explained that specialized units have raised their level of readiness in areas near the river. In addition, they have begun implementing emergency plans aimed at responding quickly to any developments that may result from increased water flow or the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
She confirmed that engineering and technical teams are working in coordination with local authorities and service agencies to continuously monitor water levels. Necessary preventative measures are also being taken to secure roads, vital infrastructure, and residential areas located near the riverbanks.
Field operations included strengthening monitoring and reconnaissance efforts and preparing the necessary equipment and machinery for rapid intervention in the event of flooding or damage caused by rising water levels. In addition, relief and evacuation efforts were supported should the situation require it.
This mobilization comes after growing concerns about the impact of the noticeable rise in the Euphrates River’s water level on several villages and population centers in the Deir ez-Zor countryside. The anxiety is particularly high in agricultural areas that rely heavily on the river as their primary water source.
