Mogadishu, Somalia – Somali authorities announced the killing of several al-Shabaab militants in an airstrike targeting the group’s positions in the Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia. This comes as part of ongoing military operations aimed at pursuing extremist groups and reducing their influence in rural areas.
Security sources reported that the airstrike killed six al-Shabaab members after targeting a site believed to have been used for the group’s movements and field activities within the region. They also indicated that the operation was based on intelligence information and surveillance of the militants’ movements.
Sources confirmed that the operation is part of ongoing security and military efforts by Somali forces in cooperation with international partners. The aim is to target al-Shabaab strongholds and prevent the group from regrouping or launching attacks against government forces and civilians.
Several areas in southern and central Somalia have recently witnessed intensified military operations against al-Shabaab. Despite increasing security and military pressure, the group continues to carry out sporadic attacks.
The Somali army is continuing its operations in conjunction with air and intelligence support from its partners. This comes amidst government efforts to strengthen stability and regain full control over areas where armed groups are active.
