New York, United States – The UAE stressed the importance of ensuring the implementation of Security Council resolutions and enforcing compliance with them. In light of the continuing violations targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. Stressing that Iranian attacks and violations in the Strait of Hormuz pose a serious threat to civilians. It impedes humanitarian access and undermines international freedom of navigation and global economic security.
The UAE said in a statement during the Security Council’s open debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict. Delivered by Ambassador Ghosq Shaheen, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State to the United Nations, this discussion comes at a time when citizens and residents of the UAE are being subjected to blatant armed Iranian attacks. Violations of all international norms and laws. Pointing out that Iran has launched thousands of missiles and drones at the UAE and neighboring countries since February 28. Deliberately targeting civilian sites and critical infrastructure, including commercial ports, airports, energy facilities, communications networks, and food production and distribution facilities.
She added: “Nearly 20,000 sailors stranded on ships in the Strait of Hormuz are exposed to life-threatening conditions, which represents a clear violation of international law”.
Obstructing navigation in Hormuz
The statement indicated that Iran’s obstruction of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz poses a serious threat that extends beyond the region’s borders. For the disruption it has caused to humanitarian operations, energy supplies and food security for millions of civilians around the world.
In this context, the UAE supports the draft resolution currently before the Security Council by Bahrain and the United States regarding the protection of international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Which has so far been sponsored by 138 countries. Noting that the support sends a clear message that the international community once again rejects Iran’s aggressive behavior. The threat it poses to civilians, freedom of international navigation, and global economic security.
At the conclusion of the statement, the UAE stressed that protecting civilians requires the Council to translate its principles into concrete measures. By ensuring the implementation of its decisions, enhancing accountability, and activating its available tools, including relevant sanctions regimes.
