Washington, DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that the United States hopes to reach an agreement with Iran that guarantees the Strait of Hormuz remains open to international navigation.
He also stressed the necessity of Tehran abandoning its nuclear ambitions,
emphasizing the importance of maintaining the security of maritime routes in the region.
During a press conference, Rubio stated that several countries have expressed
their willingness to work towards ensuring the continued freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
This comes amidst escalating tensions related to the Iranian crisis and its repercussions on global trade and energy.
Coordination with NATO allies
The US Secretary of State explained that the changes in NATO troop movements were made in full coordination with US allies.
He emphasized that the primary objective is to strengthen the alliance and its ability to address current security challenges.
Rubio added that NATO must be “valuable to the United States.” He noted the need to develop
the alliance’s capabilities and enhance the contributions of its members to collective security.
Continued support for Ukraine
Rubio noted that Ukraine is currently receiving more support than ever before from the United States and its allies.
This comes as part of ongoing Western efforts to support Kyiv in the face of military and security developments in the region.
He affirmed that Washington continues to work with its European partners
to ensure continued military and political support for Ukraine in the coming period.
Alternative plans for the Strait of Hormuz
The US Secretary of State stressed the need to prepare contingency plans
for reopening the Strait of Hormuz should Iran refuse to restore freedom of navigation.
He also stated that the international community must act to ensure the continued flow of global trade and energy.
He emphasized the importance of removing naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz,
given concerns about threats that could affect commercial shipping and global oil supplies.
Rubio’s remarks come amid escalating international efforts to contain tensions between Washington and Tehran,
coinciding with ongoing negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear program and maritime security in the Gulf.
