Vilnius, Baltic – The three Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia announced on Thursday a joint diplomatic and military initiative to pressure their NATO allies for additional support and urgent reinforcements in air defense. This follows a series of recent alarming incidents involving unidentified drones violating the region’s airspace.
Joint coordination to counter Russian disinformation
The three countries, all prominent members of NATO and the European Union, affirmed in a joint statement their commitment to fully coordinating their political and security response. They explained that this coordination is essential to counter what they described as false and misleading Russian claims and accusations. Moscow alleges that the Baltic states are allowing their territories and airspace to be used to facilitate and carry out Ukrainian military attacks against Russia.
These firm official positions were issued by the Lithuanian Presidential Office. This followed an urgent and extensive telephone call between the three heads of state to assess the rapidly evolving security situation on the Alliance’s eastern borders. The call resulted in the drafting of a unified declaration and security vision.
Escalating tensions on the East Wing
According to the joint statement, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said, following in-depth telephone talks with his Estonian counterpart Allar Kariš and Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkēvičs: “We see at the moment a clear and deliberate attempt by Moscow to escalate security and military tensions in our region, and this coincides dangerously with a fierce and coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at undermining the stability and sovereignty of the Baltic states.”
In concluding his remarks, President Nauseda emphasized the importance of defense readiness, stating, “Given these current challenges, we must remain united as a single bloc and immediately work to enhance our own capabilities in the areas of tactical air defense and counter-drone operations.
We must also work together, with one voice, to engage and attract the attention of our NATO allies and direct their resources toward securing and protecting the security of the entire eastern flank.”
These collective moves reflect the growing concerns in the Baltic capitals that the regional conflict raging in Eastern Europe could spill over into their territories. For this reason, these concerns are driving them to demand the permanent deployment of interceptor missile batteries and advanced early warning systems to deter any potential aerial threats.
