Moscow, Russia – The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday the start of large-scale, high-level military exercises from May 19 to 21. These exercises aim to test and simulate the use of the country’s strategic nuclear forces. Moscow explained that these maneuvers come “amid an escalating threat of aggression” from abroad against the national security of Russia and its allies.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in an official statement issued today: “Strong measures are planned to put the nuclear forces in a state of maximum readiness to carry out their combat missions. In addition, actual launches of ballistic and cruise missiles will be conducted at designated test ranges and facilities within the territory of the Russian Federation.”
Joint nuclear coordination with Belarus and deployment of forces
The statement, as reported by the Russian news site RT, added that the exercises will also include training in the joint preparation and use of nuclear weapons deployed on the territory of the allied Republic of Belarus. This reflects advanced defense coordination between the two countries in the face of Western pressure.
These exercises are distinguished by their broad geographical scope and the diverse range of participating military formations. The maneuvers involve the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, the Northern Fleet, and the Pacific Fleet. Also participating are the Long-Range Aviation Command (Strategic Air Force), and units and departments from the Leningrad and Central Military Districts.
Unprecedented mobilization: The language of numbers and equipment
The figures released by the Russian Ministry of Defense reflect the unprecedented scale of these deterrent exercises. A total of more than 64,000 military personnel are participating in the maneuvers, supported by over 7,800 pieces of heavy military equipment and vehicles.
