Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot revealed on Sunday a sharp escalation in the complex and critical challenges facing the Israeli government and military establishment on the northern front. This comes amidst the continued intensive and sophisticated missile attacks launched by Hezbollah in Lebanon using drones and guided missiles. These attacks have brought the region to a complete standstill.
Civilian incapacity and security failure to contain the escalation
The newspaper’s analysis stated that the Israeli government is facing significant difficulty and a clear inability to provide adequate economic, educational, and social solutions for the displaced residents of the north, or those who remain under bombardment. This civilian failure coincides with a tactical and strategic inability on the part of the military establishment to provide even a minimum level of strategic security, as promised by the political and military leadership to the population. This comes after months of continuous and draining escalation with Hezbollah.
Attack drones and Israeli military ambiguity
Yedioth Ahronoth added that the past weekend witnessed an intense and exceptional wave of drone and explosive-laden attack drone launches. In addition, successive rocket barrages targeted settlements and communities along the northern border. These developments on the ground come as the Israeli army maintains its policy of complete ambiguity and imposes strict military censorship to prevent disclosing the true extent of Hezbollah’s attacks or assessing their direct impact on infrastructure and military bases.
Plans to expand ground maneuvers beyond the “yellow line”
According to military sources cited by the newspaper, the Israeli army’s Northern Command is currently considering an escalation option: expanding its maneuvers and ground operations beyond the “yellow line.” Furthermore, these operations could reach a depth of 10 kilometers inside Lebanese border areas and villages. This option is a last-ditch effort to eliminate the threat of short-range missiles and attack drones to northern settlements. It also aims to create a security zone to facilitate the return of settlers.
The newspaper noted that the Israeli army is attempting to send a deterrent message, asserting that all Hezbollah commanders and field engineers are under close intelligence surveillance. This surveillance includes continuous, round-the-clock technological monitoring. Furthermore, the spokesperson emphasized that these commanders enjoy no operational or political immunity should the political leadership decide to carry out assassinations or direct targeting against them.
Hezbollah’s position and the future of the Washington negotiations
These explosive developments on the ground come after Hezbollah declared in an official statement on Saturday that any potential peace agreement between Lebanon and Israel constitutes a “dangerous deviation” and a “blatant and flagrant” violation of the Lebanese constitution. Furthermore, it called on the official authorities in Beirut to cooperate within the framework of national consensus to uphold fundamental principles and resist external pressures.
Lebanon and Israel agreed last Friday, during a third round of arduous talks held in Washington, D.C., to extend the temporary ceasefire for an additional 45 days. The two sides also agreed to hold a fourth round of negotiations in the near future with the aim of reaching a comprehensive peace agreement. However, this faces fierce opposition on the ground, raising the possibility of a complete collapse of the diplomatic process.
