Baghdad, Iraq – A noticeable security tension prevailed in the heart of the Iraqi capital early this morning, Thursday, April 30, 2026. This came after a reconnaissance drone was spotted and shot down while flying in the vicinity of the American diplomatic compound inside the fortified Green Zone.
Details of the incident
According to Reuters, citing senior Iraqi security sources, the drone was spotted at 6:56 a.m.
As the drone approached the restricted area, sirens sounded inside the U.S. Embassy. The compound’s air defense systems (C-RAM) were activated, along with Iraqi air defense units responsible for protecting the presidential and diplomatic quarters.
Security sources did not disclose the precise mechanism by which the aircraft was neutralized. It also remained unclear whether it was shot down by direct fire or by advanced electronic jamming systems.
Initial reports confirmed that the aircraft wreckage fell in an open area within the Green Zone. No injuries or significant damage to nearby buildings were reported.
Context of escalation
This incident comes amid a highly charged regional atmosphere. The region is witnessing a fierce struggle over waterways and an escalation in mutual threats between regional powers and the United States.
Such attacks are often blamed on armed groups seeking to undermine the American presence in Iraq. However, no group has yet claimed responsibility for operating this drone.
