Amman, Jordan – The General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces – Arab Army announced that the Eastern Military Region thwarted an attempt to smuggle large quantities of narcotics early Wednesday morning. This sophisticated operation utilized innovative techniques to circumvent border controls.
A responsible military source stated that border guard units, in coordination with security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department, detected, via advanced surveillance systems, an attempt to cross the border from the eastern side of the Kingdom using electronically guided balloons, according to the Petra News Agency. The source explained that the high level of professionalism in dealing with these unconventional methods enabled the forces to intercept and destroy the balloons. They were also secured within Jordanian territory before reaching their destination.
This operation reveals that smuggling gangs are resorting to using electronically controlled balloons in an attempt to evade radar detection and direct engagement. This tactic complements the recently increased use of drones.
The Jordanian army confirmed that all seized items have been transferred to the relevant authorities for legal action.
The source emphasized that the armed forces are committed to utilizing all available technical and human resources to deal firmly with anyone who dares to tamper with national security. It also affirmed the continued efforts to counter systematic infiltration and smuggling operations targeting the stability of the Kingdom and the safety of its citizens.
