Tehran, Iran – The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported on Wednesday that a security officer was killed and three others were wounded in an armed attack targeting a police patrol in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan province in southeastern Iran.
This incident comes amid heightened security tensions in Iran’s border regions, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in those areas.
The agency reported that unidentified gunmen opened fire early this morning on a security patrol conducting its routine duties to protect citizens in the streets of Zahedan.
The surprise attack resulted in the immediate death of Sergeant First Class Mohammad Reza Nezamdoost. Three of his colleagues were also taken to medical facilities for treatment of injuries described as ranging from moderate to severe.
Security forces are on high alert to pursue the perpetrators.
Immediately after the incident, security authorities in the region declared a state of alert. Special units launched extensive search and sweep operations in the areas surrounding the shooting site. The aim was to pursue the perpetrators and close in on them before they could escape. Official sources confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the criminal identities of the attackers. They also promised to release further details to the public as soon as they become available.
Fingers are pointing towards “Jaish al-Adl”
Although no official claim of responsibility has been issued yet, observers are pointing the finger at the Baloch opposition group Jaish al-Adl.
This group is one of the most prominent armed organizations active in the border region. Therefore, it frequently employs a strategy of targeting Iranian security and military forces.
This attack marks another chapter in the ongoing conflict in Sistan and Baluchestan. Separatist groups are seeking to undermine Iran’s security grip in the southeastern regions bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan.
