Washington, DC – In a direct military escalation that puts global maritime security at risk, US President Donald Trump has issued strict orders to the US Navy to intensify its mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz. He instructed them to immediately open fire on any vessels attempting to threaten trade in the strategic waterway.
Three times the density
On his Truth Social platform, Trump announced in a brief but firm message Thursday morning: “Our minesweepers are now clearing the Strait of Hormuz.” The US president didn’t just monitor the ongoing operations; he added: “I hereby order this activity to continue, but at three times the intensity!” This was a clear indication of Washington’s intention to establish complete military control over the strait. Approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through the strait.
New rules of engagement: Targeting small boats
In a move reflecting a shift in the rules of engagement on the ground, Trump revealed direct instructions to the US Navy to target and destroy any vessel, including small boats, suspected of laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. This decision aims to thwart the tactics employed by certain factions and regional powers. These groups use small, fast boats to deploy mines beyond the reach of conventional radar, thus escalating military tensions with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
The repercussions of the decision on energy markets and the truce
This announcement coincides with the naval blockade imposed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Iranian ports. This blockade has caused Brent crude prices to surge above $100 a barrel.
Observers believe that Trump’s recent orders are a “death blow” to diplomatic efforts at de-escalation, effectively transforming the Strait of Hormuz into an open military operations zone. While Washington maintains that its objective is to “secure navigation,” Tehran considers these actions “international piracy” and an attack on its territorial sovereignty. These developments place the region on the brink of a potential military confrontation should any clashes occur between US destroyers and Iranian vessels.
