Athens – Archaeologists in Greece have announced the discovery of a weapons manufacturing workshop dating back to the era of Alexander the Great on the island of Andros. Researchers described the find as one of the most significant discoveries related to ancient military industries in recent years.

The excavation team explained that the site contains remains of smelting furnaces, metals, and manufacturing tools used to produce weapons and military equipment relied upon by Macedonian armies during the 4th century BC. The site provides vital evidence regarding the mechanisms of equipping ancient armies and the specialized production of spears, swords, and shields.

Strategic Location and Military Evolution

Greek authorities emphasized that this discovery aids in a deeper understanding of the economic and military structure of that era, particularly given Andros Island’s strategic position in the Aegean Sea as a vital point for trade and naval supply. Such specialized production centers reflect the military and organizational development that contributed to building one of the largest empires in ancient history.

Manufacturing Techniques and Ongoing Research

Experts believe that ongoing excavation and study at the site may reveal further details regarding ancient weapon-making techniques and their transport to armies. This discovery comes amid growing interest in historical excavations in Greece, aiming to uncover more secrets of ancient civilizations that played a pivotal role in shaping Mediterranean military history.
